“We do not draw people to Christ by loudly discrediting what they believe, by telling them how wrong they are and how right we are, but by showing them a light that is so lovely that they want to know the source of it.”—Madeleine L’Engle
We Want You to be a Part of our Family
We sincerely look forward to having you be a part of our church family. Please feel free to participate in any and all areas of worship and ministry. Everyone is welcome, and official membership can come when you decide. We are all eager to help you understand our church—its beliefs and practices, its style of worship. Please let us know if there is any way we can help you.
Becoming a Member of St. John’s
People become members of an Episcopal Church in several ways. The first way is through baptism. (No matter where or when you were baptized, you are a part of the Body of Christ and eligible to receive Communion and to participate in our life together as a parish family.) If you were baptized at St. John’s, your name is listed in our Parish Register, an official accounting of your membership status.
As a teen or an adult, you may want to further your commitment to Christ and reconfirm the vows made for you at your baptism by being confirmed. This sacrament is bestowed by the Bishop and generally comes after the completion of a Teen Confirmation Class or an Adult Inquirer’s Class.
Some of our members come to us by means of a Letter of Transfer. This means that the person is a member of another Episcopal Church and is simply transferring their membership to St. John’s. We then record their names in the Parish Register.
Another way of becoming a member of St. John’s is through Reception. This is for members who have been confirmed in another branch of the Church in Apostolic Succession, such as the Roman Catholic, Lutheran, or any of the various Orthodox Churches. This formality is usually done by the Bishop at Confirmation.
