from the Summer LOGOS
Summer certainly provides us with a change of pace. And while for those of our number not keyed in to the school calendar, life might change less than for those who are teaching or learning in school, still, the longer days and warmer nights allow for a great deal more activity than we could have had just a month ago. And, rightly so, we spend time travelling to visit family and friends.
But (and I say this as your rector) don’t let the relaxed pace of summer relax your devotion. Sundays should still be set aside for worship, and if you are travelling, you should still seek out a church to attend so that you can receive the Sacrament. It is your life in Christ, anchored by the living into the events of his saving death and received in Bread and Wine. This necessity does not go away just because you are off having fun!
But here at home, the life of the parish will go on, even if in a slightly different mode. Saturday morning studies will continue (though at 8:00 am rather than 7:30), and Adult education on Sundays will continue (when we are not having a brunch or some other wonderful eating event), and we are going to co-operate with Trinity Lutheran Church on Vacation Bible School during the week of July 19th. These things will be on the calendar, as we all as Holy Day celebrations and other special events. So, do not forget to stay connected with your source of spiritual life and community!
And take the chance of long evenings to invite others of our household of faith to your home and grill burgers (of the meat or vegetarian variety) and share life and faith stories. It is a time almost custom built for forging friendship and real companionship, so take advantage of Summer.
